Remember the Titans named Greatest Sports Movie of All-Time

By a vote of 56 to 21, Remember the Titans has been crowned the Greatest Sports Movie of All-Time by the readers of jackvita.com and the listeners of the Jack Vita Show.

Over the weekend, Remember the Titans defeated the 1996 classic golf comedy Happy Gilmore in the championship round of the Greatest Sports Movie of All-Time bracket. It wasn't until now that I realized that I made a noticeable gaffe with the bracket: I had intended for both of the top films on the left side of the bracket to square off in the Final Four, and have the same on the right side of the bracket. It's how I've been conditioned to look at brackets from a young age. Never in my life have I seen the upper half of the bracket on both the left and the right side meeting in the Final Four. Nor have I seen the two bottom half champs squaring off in the Final Four, but it appears the bracket template that I borrowed was designed for that to happen. Oh well, I stuck to my guns when it comes to brackets and still had Remember the Titans take on Miracle and Happy Gilmore go against Major League. Therefore, the physical bracket I have created is flawed. Oh well. Unfortunately, we didn't get the same kind of voter turnout as we normally did, as my Instagram story was regularly buried in the app's algorithm. My Instagram story regularly gets 150 to 180 views, however during this bracket, there were days when my story was receiving no more than 40 views. Listeners and readers had written in to me informing me that my story, which normally appears at the top of their Instagram stories available for viewing, wasn't showing up, period.

I'm not sure what I did to tick off the folks at Instagram, but unfortunately, our results were skewed due to only having a small fraction of the normal size of our audience voting. Still, I had a fun time running the bracket, and I hope you did too! In the Final Four, Remembers the Titans defeated Miracle 55-33, in a battle of Disney classics. Happy Gilmore delivered a victory over Major League 45-24. A Netflix Major League-Happy Gilmore crossover would actually be a lot of fun. I really wonder who would win a fight between Wild Thing and Happy. Wild Thing scares me, but Happy is the only guy that's ever taken his skate off and tried to stab somebody with it. Come to think of it, I don't want to be anywhere near either of those sociopaths. It was fitting for a pair of harder-edged sports flicks slugged it out, while PG-rated, warm Disney films battled on the other side. In the end, it was the Disney movie that won out.

Going into the bracket, I expected Remember the Titans to win. It's a great film, but it wouldn't be in my top 5 favorites in this tournament field. Maybe it would make the top 10. Maybe. I'm still a Friday Night Lights guy through and through, but you can do a LOT worse than Remember the Titans. Even though the film isn't historically accurate in the least bit, it's a movie at the end of the day. It's not a documentary. I'm okay with directors and writers taking some creative liberties to deliver the best movie they can make.

Thank you to everybody who showed out and voted over the past two months during our Sports Movie bracket! I hope you all had a lot of fun with it, as I sure did. I'm sure we will be running another bracket soon enough, but for now I need a break. Plenty of great sports going on!
